My tips on getting hits.
Getting hits is quite an important part of owning a website, as you do want visitors to visit your site and be able to find it again. Some adivce I got a while ago about getting hits was:
I'd say personally, that the #1 tip for getting hits is by just putting yourself out there and offering something different - if people like what you've got to offer then they'll return. - Rhiannon Phillips
I couldn't agree with her more!
Below are a list of ways to get more hits, that work for me as well as a brief definition of what they are. (They are in alphabetical order).
Affies/Siblings.
Basically the same thing, a person who you link to and they link you back. Your link will usually be in a visible site on their site so will be seen quite often by their visitors. Be careful on who you be affies or sisters with however, as some are in it just to get hits. Affies/sisters will usually visit your site on a regular basis and expect the same as you, affies/sisters are usually seen as your 'online friends'.
Bannner Advertising.
This is where a site will have your banner/button on their site in a reasonably visible place for a certain amount of time. There are twos types of banner advertising 'free' and 'paid'. Personally I would choose free for obvious reasons.
Button Exchanges/Link Exchanges.
Basically the same thing except with a button exchange you would be liking by buttons and with link exchanges you just get a simple text link, you are required to link the person back in the same/similar way. My experience has found that button exchanges are better as the buttons themselves are easier to see and a lot catch visitors eyes.
Button Rotations.
A rotation is when you put a code on your site that randomly picks a site that has joined the rotation as well as a link to the rotation site as well. Usually the more visitors you have that click on a button in the rotation the more times your button will be displayed on other pages in the rotation. Since this is the case it can be difficult to get hits this way and take time.
Forums.
I'm new to advertising via forums and so far I have found it beneficial. A fourm is a place where a group of people go to chat online about various topics. Most forums other a special place for you to advertise your site to the rest of the people that use the fourm.
Interacting.
By this I mean using a persons site, e.g. leaving comments, using tagboards, using guestboards etc. Some sites also other visitor surveys and usually post you answers and url on their site. This can be a good way to get comments, but sometimes thats all the individual will do. However, it is important that you do not spam or pester the owner as if you do it is unlikely they will visit your site at all if you do so. Another type of interaction is 'Reviews' in which a site owner will offer to view and review your site, these are useful as you get tips on how to improve your site and most people will link back the sites they review. Although it's really best to go to an actual WPR, because most personal sites that contain a reviewing page don't have a lot of knowledge on the subject they're reviewing.
Plugboards.
Plugboards are useful but don't usually give you many hits (in my experience). To use a plug board you add your site information into it, usually a text/button url and your site url and it will appear automatically. The advantage is that depending on how popular the site is you may not get your button seen often, also you need to keep re-adding your button.
Tell your mates.
I find this one very useful, and have quite a few offline friends that visit my site on a regular basis, and if they tell their friends and their friends tell thier friends and so on, then thats a lot more unique hits to the site.
I hope these tips help you in getting more site traffic, remember these are just my opinions on what works best for my site. There are many other different ways, you need to find out what works best for you and your site.
